Event Recap: Vote Mama Illinois Frontline Candidate Fundraiser

The Vote Mama Illinois Frontline Candidate Fundraiser on July 15 was a major success, with support coming in from all over the state and from around the country. The event brought in over $10,000 to bolster the upcoming elections of Vote Mama’s fantastic Democratic candidates—and mothers—Jahana Hayes (CT-05), Kim Schrier (WA-08), Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), and Hillary Scholten (MI-03). Vote Mama Founder Liuba Gretchen Shirley and Vote Mama Director Sarah Hague were in attendance alongside Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas, Illinois State Representative Mary Beth Canty, Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Samantha Steele, and New Trier Township Supervisor Gail Schnitzer Eisenberg.

Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, in her first term as the 3rd district of Michigan and the first woman to be elected in her district, was the event’s special guest. Since being elected, Rep. Scholten has taken a strong stance in support of access to maternal care, has condemned violence against healthcare providers who performing life-saving procedures, and has called out corporations for using outdated child labor laws to their advantage. During the event, she gave an impassioned speech about the importance of passing legislation that is actually “pro-life” rather than “pro-birth,” and how the choices we make now will create the future for our children that we envision. As a mother and a person of faith, Rep. Scholten understands how critical fighting anti-LGBTQ+ and other fascism-informed legislation is for our shared future. Securing childcare and preschool education for working families and their children, supporting seekers of reproductive and maternal care in her state, and providing economic opportunities and improving infrastructure for her district remain at the top of Rep. Scholten’s list of priorities.

Vote Mama Illinois State Chair and host of the event Alexandra Eidenberg, President and Founder of The Insurance People, is grateful for everyone’s support for Vote Mama’s frontline candidates.
