2027 Illinois Budget: How It Affects Your Healthcare

On June 1st, 2026, Illinois lawmakers approved the state's Fiscal Year 2027 budget, much of which focuses on making healthcare more affordable for Illinoisans, and it went into effect on July 1st, 2026. Despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding federal healthcare funding, the 2027 budget continues to invest in Medicaid, behavioral health services, hospitals, and other healthcare programs that Illinois residents rely on. The budget also includes additional funding for medical services and initiatives to improve access to care. 

One aspect of the budget that is especially important to your healthcare is the continued focus on the Medical Debt Relief Pilot Program, highlighted by Governor JB Pritzker. As, State Senate President Don Harmon emphasized "This budget strengthens support for working families, protects access to hospitals and health care... and it does it all without raising the state income tax or sales tax".

For most Illinois residents with Marketplace, employer-sponsored, or Medicare coverage, this budget won't immediately change how your health insurance works. However, it’s important to know what resources are available to you when seeking healthcare coverage, even as federal funding and healthcare policies remain uncertain.
